Nel 268 a.C. i romani “fondarono” la colonia di Ariminum e vi stanziarono una legione e coloni plebei di Roma.
La posizione geografica ne fece un bastione contro l’avanzata dei Galli, e un avamposto per le conquiste verso la Pianura Padana. Rimini era un’importante rotta di comunicazione tra il Nord e il Centro Italia. Da qui partivano ben tre delle più importanti vie Romane, la Via Flaminia, la Via Emilia e la Via Popilia-Annia.

Sotto l’Impero Romano Rimini fiorì e vi si costruirono diversi monumenti importanti e da vedere assolutamente come il Ponte di Tiberio, l’Arco di Augusto, che è il più antico arco romano ancora esistente, dopo ben 2050 anni. Da visitare anche il teatro e l’anfiteatro, sempre di epoca romana. Uno dei ritrovamenti più interessanti è la famosa domus del chirurgo, una casa del III secolo d.C., appartenuta a un ricco chirurgo romano. All’interno sono stati ritrovati moltissimo mosaici ma soprattutto molti strumenti chirurgici dell’epoca, oggi esposti al museo cittadino.

Ma anche durante il medioevo la città fu un centro importante. La città divenne un Comune nel corso del XII secolo, e a seguito dei crescenti ordini religiosi che vi si stabilirono durante il XIII secolo, vennero edificati numerosi conventi e chiese. Conseguentemente arrivarono in città anche illustri artisti per progettare e decorare questi edifici. Il grande pittore Giotto fu l’ispiratore della scuola pittorica riminese del quattordicesimo secolo. Dell’insigne pittore, ci rimane un crocifisso e parte di un affresco conservata nella Chiesa di Sant’Agostino, arte che ammalia centinaia di migliaia di turisti da tutta Europa che hanno effettuato la loro prenotazione hotel riviera.

Oltre agli edifici religiosi, possiamo ricordare gli edifici civili, che si ammassano tutti intorno alla Piazza del Comune (l’attuale piazza Cavour), il Palazzo dell’Arengo e il Palazzo del Podestà. In epoca comunale infatti, il centro del potere a Rimini venne spostato in questa zona, mentre l’antico Foro, veniva utilizzato per il mercato e, successivamente, per le giostre.

In seguito ad una prima fase in cui la città sposò la causa ghibellina, Rimini divenne guelfa. Dal 1295 Rimini, divenne una signoria, il cui territorio superava i confini geografici della Romagna,
Uno dei monumenti più celebri della città romagnola, presente nei testi di architettura anche stranieri, è il Tempio Malatestiano, progettato da Leon Battista Alberti intorno al 1450 per volere di Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, signore di Rimini durante il XV secolo. Altro luogo di interesse appartenente a quest’epoca, è il Castel Sismondo, il castello-reggia di Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, che venne iniziato nel 1437 e finito nel 1446.
